I have worked in social care for many many years. I started as a care assistant, then into management, followed by becoming a specialist support provider.

For many years we have been told to work in a person-centered way, but not always told how or what this means.

I passionately believe that support for people with intellectual disabilities needs to change. .I believe that there are many areas that can be benefit from providing a PBS, Active Support system within current setting, This is achievable by front-line workers and management adopting an Active Support' culture. Which will result in achieving a positive impact on the people we support. In order for this to be successful, service providers will need to develop a Positive Behavior Support approach to service provision.

What is Active Support? In short Active Support is a quality and quantitative measurable support system that keeps the person at the centre of their support. This is accomplished by ensuring they have access to and are supported in meaningful activities that allow for full engagement regardless of the behaviour or needs. It will open doors for the person to participate in activities within their community. It will provide the person with a consistent approach from their staff team, set at a level that they understand and will represent an ordinary life. Active Support can improve the quality of life for many people. Used in conjunction with Positive Behaviour Support framework, means that people with behaviours of concern are no longer segregated from opportunities.
